My guesses:
-John's Dad shot Hal.
-Look at the technological Chekov's Guns: Hal's copy of his consciousness, Zoe's body replicator, Antaan's memory injector. Hal IS dead and we're getting a younger innocent one.

Is it possible that “Dead” Hal is a clone the Hal created and shot. And this whole time Hal has been manipulating the situation, one to try and recover his ring and also try and flush out another manhunter.
