that series/paralell thing has resulted in deaths. hyatt regency walkway collapse was basically this.

go from springs in series to springs in parallel, so effective spring constant goes from k/2 to 2k, (you're effectively cutting the spring in half which halves the spring distance, then having the second half work on pulling it up too) the weight would rise
